Spirit Day is Tomorrow
Spirit Day at Haisley is tomorrow 2/27/15. Wear something that represents your favorite sports team! Mark your calendars! The next two Spirit Days are scheduled for Friday, March 13th and Friday, March 27th.
Book Fair / Reading – Game Night
Haisley’s annual Scholastic Book Fair will run from Monday, March 2 until Friday, March 6th. from 9:00 – 4:00. There will be a cashier on duty during those times and during Reading Night on Wednesday, March 4th from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. Hope to see you there!

IT’S TIME TO ORDER YOUR 2015 HAISLEY PLAYERS’ SHIRT!
This year’s shirts feature an awesome School House Rock LIVE! Jr. design by Haisley fourth grader Ava Prude and are available in youth and adult sizes in three styles: short-sleeve tee, baseball tee and pull-over hoodie (picture and order form attached). They’re really cool!
Order forms will be sent home in backpack mail, posted by the Haisley Players’ showcase (across from the Media Center) and can be downloaded off the Haisley Players’ website. All proceeds benefit the Haisley Players.

It’s never too cold to think about ice cream
Believe it or not, it’s time to start thinking about (and planning) Haisley’s annual Ice Cream Social. This end-of-the-year celebration is one of our most popular community events. It takes an enormous number of volunteers to make it happen. We are looking for a co-chair who has been a Haisley parent for at least one year. One parent has already stepped up to help run this year’s social and we also have last year’s chair as a mentor. Yearbook order forms will be going out to families in early March with a deadline on orders of April 1st. We wanted families to know that this year there will be a cost associated with the orders. The cost will depend on a few factors: total number of orders, ads that are purchased by businesses and families, and printing costs. The hope is that the cost for each student will be between $8-$9.

FAREWELL TO MRS. MCLEAN
Friday, Jan. 30 was the last day at Haisley for our beloved Media Specialist, Kim McLean. The students gathered in front of the Media Center at the end of the day (all 408!) to clap her out! Mrs. McLean has taken a new job at Clague Middle School. We congratulate her on her new position there. Those middle school students are so fortunate to have such a dedicated and talented media specialist! Mrs. Marcia Boik has taken her place through the end of the school year. Mrs. Boik is a certified teacher and has taken off running here at Haisley. Please help us welcome her to Haisley!

Administrative Intern
Mrs. Halimahali Al-Qadi has joined Ms. Scarnecchia as an intern, experiencing the day-to-day life of a building administrator. She is a student at Eastern Michigan University with a great deal of teaching and leadership experience. All of the students have now been introduced to her and will in some ways interact with her through the end of March.

HAISLEY PLAYERS DESIGN CONTEST WINNER
The Haisley Players just announced the winner of the Schoolhouse Rock LIVE! Jr. design contest. It was a very tough a decision. There were 17 creative and amazing entries this year! The winning design was by Ava Prude from Ms. Harris' 4th grade class. Ava's design will be used on the T-shirts, posters, and program covers for this year’s production. She will receive a free T-shirt once they are printed. Congratulations, Ava!
The Haisley Players were very happy with ALL of the contest entries. They would like to thank everyone who entered. Great work everyone!!
Borrowed Clothes from the Office
If your child has borrowed clothes, (pants, sock, or what have you), from the office please be sure to clean them and return them as soon as possible. Now that the cold wet weather is here you would be amazed at the number of clothes we hand out everyday. If we do not get the clothes we lend out back, it means either a child must sit in cold, wet clothes or, a call home needs to be placed. Please try to remember to clean and return the clothes back to the office. We can always use sweet pants and socks if you have any that you are no longer using!

News Blast: 2/3/15
SCHOOL LOCKDOWN PROTOCOL
For the safety of our students, Haisley staff and students will continue to practice our lockdown procedures. Attached is a letter that was sent to parents back in October after staff was trained. After this week's drill, it became clear that visiting parents did not understand what to do during a lockdown. We realize it is also critical that parents know before a lockdown drill that one will take place. In the future, parents will receive notification about the upcoming drill. Here are three things parents need to do regarding lockdown drills at Haisley:
1. If you are in the school, lockdown in place, please go to the nearest room. If you are closer to the office, go there. All adults must participate in lockdown.
2. If you arrive at the school and the door is locked, please return to your car until the drill is over (you will see movement and activity again).
3. Talk to your child about the drill to reassure them we do them just to practice being safe. Teachers are also giving this message.

6th Grade Parent Orientations
This year Forsythe will be holding their parent orientation this Thursday, Feb. 5, 2015 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. This orientation is for parents only. The parent orientation program will begin in Forsythe's auditorium. At the orientation you will learn about the 6th grade curriculum, classroom expectations, and opportunities for students.
Slauson will be holding theirs on Wednesday, March 11 at 6:30 p.m. in their auditorium. Please see the attached flyer for more information.

Haisley Heart Dance Friday, Feb. 6
Come dance and have fun at the Haisley Heart Dance Friday, Feb. 6 from 6-8 p.m. Besides dancing in the multi-purpose room, there will be face-painting, tattoos, food, drinks, and basketball in the gym! This event benefits 5th grade camp. Cost is $5 per person or $20 per family. A chaperone is required. Annual NAAPID event honors founder, features talent showcase
This year’s National African American Parent Involvement Day (NAAPID) will be held Monday, Feb. 9 at 5:30 p.m. at the Ypsilanti Community Middle School, 235 Spencer Lane, Ypsilanti. This year marks NAAPID’s 20th Anniversary. The event, NAAPID at Night 2015, is a talent showcase of parents, students, and community members to honor NAAPID’s founder, Joe Dulin, who passed away October 23, 2014. This year, Haisley’s fifth graders will be going to Camp Storer from May 26-29. We are in need of parents who can commit to staying with us the whole time or for one or more 24-hour time slots. The continuity provided by parents who can stay is essential.
The price per student is mitigated by our camp fundraising efforts: cookbooks, a resale shop, Haisley Heart Dance, collecting bottles, and a Haisley Talent Show. Registration will remain open until March 22nd, however this date is two weeks into the program and space is limited. Many of our sites fill up quickly so we encourage you to register as soon as possible to guarantee your daughter a spot on the team.

Fifth Grade Camp
Fifth grade camp offers exceptional learning opportunity
Camp links outdoor classes to classroom learning
Fifth grade camp is a Haisley tradition that started nearly 14 years ago when Mrs. Bono and Mrs. Schafer took their multi-age 4th/5th graders on overnight trips to Howell Nature Center. Soon Mrs. Shedd, Mrs. DeRosia and Mr. Weindorf enlarged the vision and all fifth graders attended at YMCA’s Camp Storer. This unique four-day school experience centers on outdoor education classes where students try a variety of new activities which connect to their classroom learning.
This year, Haisley’s fifth graders will be going to Camp Storer from May 26-29. We are in need of parents who can commit to staying with us the whole time or for one or more 24-hour time slots. The continuity provided by parents who can stay is essential. Please consider letting your work know that you will be volunteering for this wonderful opportunity at the end of May.
The price per student is mitigated by our camp fundraising efforts. This year, we have already raised money with our cookbook sales and Haisley resale shop (thank you Mrs. Shrag!). We will be having a Haisley Heart Dance (thank you Mrs. Lochmann!). We are collecting bottles (thank you Mrs. Christiansen!) and a Haisley Talent Show is also in the works (thank you Mrs. Tauber!).
Our next big fundraiser is Gourmet Snacks – all items $6. We still need a parent volunteer to head this up. This is your opportunity to chip in and help!
